Don't forget to take a look at our display in the library of titles which have been challenged or banned in Canada...2011
This is “Freedom to Read” week in Canada, where we remember to value the liberty Canadians have to decide for ourselves which books we value. Every year there are certain titles which are challenged in schools and libraries because of their content. From the Bible to Harry Potter--books of all stripes cause controversy. Should they be taken off the shelves? Who should make that decision? Should other people be allowed to make that choice for you or should you decide for yourself? People feel strongly about these questions, and it is an important issue for us to consider in a Christian school, where we believe that God’s redemptive claim extends to all culture and all life. Are there certain topics that should be “off limits”? Are there things that we shouldn’t know about or learn about? Is it preferable to read about these things in the safety of a Christian school setting where we can recognize the world’s brokenness and explore a Christian response to it? Maybe the biggest questions of all are “what makes something a good book?” and “what makes it a bad book?” Here is a list of books in our library which have been questioned in Canadian schools, organized by the year they were formally challenged. How many have you read? How many of these are taught at SCS?
